My approach to music teaching is an ever-evolving unique amalgam of all that I have learned and continue to learn, based on my lifelong love of music, and deep respect for the power of rhythm and music to reach people on all levels.
I arrived at the practices of drumming, sound healing and TaKeTiNa through a circuitous route, having spent the earlier part of my life immersed in the world of classical music as a chamber and symphonic performer and teacher. I first encountered the practice of vocal toning at the WomenFriends Music and Creativity Camp (in 1995), and found that it moved me in ways I had never imagined possible, both physically and emotionally. This experience inspired me to study and practice toning at every available opportunity.
About a year later I took up African style drumming, and soon noticed that it too had the power to move me and others emotionally, both in individual and group situations. I studied African and Latin style drumming for five years with Pepe Danza, and was a member for several years of one of his many bands, "The Rhythm Fools". I love teaching drumming, especially beginners, and seeing people of all ages light up as they connect with the joy and power of rhythmic music.
I have certificates in the uses of sound and music in healing from Pat Moffitt Cook at the Open Ear Center on Bainbridge Island, Washington (1998), and also from Simon Heather of the U.K. Sound Healers Association (2002). In 2003, I completed a 12-week course in Holistic Massage and Aromatherapy, and have integrated some bodywork practices into my sound healing sessions. My latest exciting adventure is becoming a certified Taketina Teacher (see www.taketina.com), which is expanding my awareness of archetypal rhythym in both my teaching and my life.
I completed the basic TaKeTiNa teacher training together with Brian in October 2008.
